Love Drips & Gathers - Piroshka
Tumblr media
2.6/5.0
Fuck that!!!!!!!!!!!
Baila entre music for the summer y music to bore the absolute shit out of everyone.
If that makes sense, no sé.

Piroshka — Brickbat (Bella Union)
Tumblr media
youtube
Everything old is back again if not always new. When members of bands you liked join forces there is always expectation and trepidation. Piroshka is a band with something to say and a sound that’s a joy to hear.
Former Lush leader Miki Berenyi joins forces with guitarist K J McKillop (Moose), bassist Mick Conroy (Modern English) and drummer Justin Welch (Elastica) to release their debut album Brickbat. Berenyi remains in fine voice and her songcraft is undiminished from the halcyon 1990s. Brickbat opens with a short blast of feedback before resolving into a collection of tracks that explore the intersections of the political and personal. This is a far more engaged and energetic album than many fans of the source bands might expect. Songwriters Berenyi and McKillop address issues like Brexit, gun violence and religion. They find refuge from individual confusion and frustration in collective engagement and the seemingly small acts of resistance from which movements spring. If this sounds heavy Piroshka wrap their lyrics in sweet indie arrangements augmented with strings, brass and electronics and Berenyi’s voice to the fore.  This is music that chimes and charms.
“This is Bedlam” opens the album with a statement of intent and call to arms.  Over glam drums, Berenyi excoriates social media warriors, “You win, we all lose.”  “Village of the Damned” deals with school shootings over gentle guitars and a shuffling beat decorated with a 1960s horn riff and muted trumpet solo. “The long forgotten days when we were divided are back again,” laments “What’s Next” but there is hope in unity, belief and protest. The production allows the music to breath and swell. Judicious use of horns and strings emphasizes the strength of Piroshka’s musical vision and if there are echoes of other bands it never detracts from Brickbat’s intent not to rest of its creators collective and individual histories.
Both McKillop and Berenyi understand the need to speak to the current climate of confusion, despair and mutual misunderstanding as an imperative and keenly felt responsibility. That sense of engagement informs Brickbat as does the awareness that glib statements of obvious finger pointing add to the problem. This is the sound of vital musicians making interesting, committed indie rock for troubled times without foregoing melody, harmony and optimism. Brickbat is a worthy addition to the growing canon of bands and performers addressing the powers that be.
“For what are we but jelly and sticks/In a sack of skin just getting our kicks”

BLOOM - Piroshka ‘Brickbat’
Tumblr media
Review by Jasleen Dhindsa
Release Date: February 15th, 2019
Rating: 3.5/5
For fans of: Lush, Garbage
Piroskha are a 90s Britpop supergroup, formed by members of Elastica, Lush, Modern English and Moose. The band name is taken from the Hungarian take on the fairytale hero Little Red Riding Hood, which is fitting when considering the tracks on their debut record Brickbat are politically conscious, trying to sift through the shit-show that is plaguing British and American politics at the moment.
This theme is exactly what you get as soon as the album starts with ‘This Must Be Bedlam’, a Brexit anthem with a Facebook bashing intro. The tik-toking guitars reflect a blurry state of mind, and barks featured throughout feel like rabid dogs about to be unleashed, multiplying the chaos. It’s an intense but powerful introduction - a definite statement.
The dreamy ‘Village of the Damned’ follows, enveloped lavishly with other-worldly textures that conjure up feelings of voyaging, an emotion felt throughout the record. The brass at the end of the track is the cherry on top of the icing too.
Brickbat’s highlight is the fantastic ‘Never Enough’, which feels nostalgic but new at the same with its disjointed disco and industrial edges, and delectable bassy grooves and dancing drums.
'What’s Next’ is another frank commentary on the state of the world, but following track ‘Hated By The Powers That Be’ offers more hope with its sweet dream pop manifesting itself as an outcast anthem. These two tracks symbolise Brickbat’s moods, where gloom and optimism battle it out.
Whilst the instrumentation impressively runs through a long list of genres, like the epic ‘Run For Your Life’ which whizzes you up in a rocket ship, blasting through sparkling synths - the lyrics are where Brickbat falls flat. There’s to the point and then there’s too to the point. This is ultimately a punk record, and punk is about being forthright, but there are several areas where there seems to be no creativity matching that of the instrumentation. ‘Heartbeats’ is where the album loses all coherance, however, it is (thankfully) saved by the fairytale notes of glorious lead single ‘Everlastingly Yours’, and the apocalyptic closer ‘She’s Unreal’.
The formation of this supergroup is largely a good thing, and Brickbat is great for a debut album, yet whilst the music is considerably distinguishable from the members’ former bands, you wish that it was as spectacular as their former careers.

:( MUTATOM!
1. Fontaines D.C.- Dogrel
2. Fujiya Miyagi- Flashback
3. Ride- This Is Not A Safe Place
4. Marika Hackman- Any Human Friend
5. Piroshka- Brickbat
6. Fabienne Delsol- Four

Brickbat - Piroshka
Tumblr media
2.9/5.0

SOME LISTS BY DINA HORNREICH
In a not-so comprehensive (mostly desultory) manner I have thrown this list of current zeitgeisty kinds of things that I encountered in one way or another that had various compelling bits, chunks, and other substantial nuggets (if not their complete entirety) of a musical persuasion that provided something engaging, amusing, enlightening, challenging, discordant, or otherwise worthwhile for my freaky mind, body, and soul to chew on in this last year of 2019. There are always tons and tons of things that I missed and/or never got to (but always meant to) so not exhaustive whatsoever.  And to go full circle around in the weird miasmic disorientations of blogs/zines, and every tool in between...I could mention the writers at Bust, Bitch, Pitchfork, even… DAGGER. But credit for discoverability also includes the vending platforms of Spotify/Bandcamp/Apple Music/Soundcloud themselves (and their haunted algorithms) as well as musicians’ various social media counterparts (which may or may not include their publicists) on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. (and where does YouTube fit in exactly?) which means the industry will eventually eat itself. Happy New Year, ladies and germs. Who knows what the next decade will bring? Whatever it may be, let it be progress rather than random changes for no apparently good reasons.

Ahogyan nekem is adnak tippeket mások listái. Köszi mindenkinek a közös gondolkodást!
